Technology and the Esthetician

I am truly fascinated with the impact technology has made on everyday life.  I often think to myself, "What DID I do before cells phones were invented?"  Many of us practice Esthetics because we have a desire to connect with other human beings using our hands and providing meaningful or at the very least, useful treatments and services.  What about when the server is down or the newest software has a few "bugs"? Technology or the lack thereof can get in the way of our productivity.

There IS an APP for that!  Here are a few apps Estheticians may find useful:

www.wemo.com
WIMO

This app is a total Home/Business Automation solution.  is designed to turn on or turn off computers, appliances and lighting in your home or business.  Hmmmm, so you mean I can actually turn my wax pots off and on from an app on my phone? YES!  I can turn the crock pot on in the middle of the day for dinner to be prepared by the time I get home?  YES!  Did I remember to turn off the curling iron/clothing iron/lights or close the garage door?  No problem…the WEMO can make sure no appliance is left on in your home or business.  Simply purchase a WeMo Switch for any electronic appliance, connect to your WiFi and route to the app on your phone.  There are more advanced adapters for the home.  Food is meant to be cooked…not wax!  There is no excuse for keeping your wax pots on overnight with technology like this!

LIRA Clinical - Discovering Natures Secrets

Does your skin care line have an app?  This one does!  Lira clinical has developed an app featuring the full line of products.  Simply swipe your smart phone to reveal the following features:
  • Product ingredients and benefits
  • Webinar and Live Class dates in your area
  • Social Media Links
  • Account Application
  • Image Gallery to save and share
Search Lira Clinical in your app store to download the app for free.

Armpit Waxing Makeover Salon

You can LOL, LMBO and SMH between clients with this fun game app!  Touch start on the screen, dip the wax stick in the pot, apply and remove the strip and hear them SCREAM!  Disclaimer: This is the only place you should ever double-dip…have fun with this one!

Enzymes are good for the body & GREAT for the skin!

The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines an enzyme as "any of numerous complex proteins that are produced by living cells and catalyze specific biochemical reactions at body temperatures".  We find enzymes in many of the foods we eat such as pineapple, tomatoes and papaya to name a few.  These foods assist in the digestion and metabolism process along with the body's natural energy to break-down the foods we eat into the necessary nutrients we need to nourish our bodies.

You may ask, what does this have to do with skin care?  Well, enzymes are also applied topically to the skin in the form of cleansers and exfoliating masks.  Like the rest of the body, they cause a biochemical reaction on the surface of the skin by loosening keratinized cells that cause a dry, dull complexion.

Enzyme Peels are ideal to refresh the skin by removing dead skin cells, allowing for better penetration of active serums or moisturizers.  They are also great for preparing the skin for deeper peel treatments such as Salicylic, Lactic or Glycolic Acids to correct specific skin conditions such as acne, pigmentation and anti-aging concerns.

For Licensed Professionals: If you would like to learn more about how the use of Enzymes can benefit your clients and your business, visit my Facebook Page at Lira Clinical - Los Angeles, CA to register for the Lira Clinical - GPS I Chemical Peeling Class.

Is your skin well hydrated?

Is your skin well hydrated?  How do you know?   Here are a few key questions about your skin.  Does your skin feel oily?  Do you use an astringent or toner daily?  Is your skin congested with oil that does not purge on it's own or is not easily extracted? If your answer is yes to at least two of these questions, they your skin in likely dehydrated.

Hydration is important for ALL skin types, oily to dry.  Regardless of the oil content of your skin, the skin needs water to function properly.  Oil and water are two different things and they do not mix.  Your skin needs a balance of both.  Skin cannot purge excess oil and may actually produce more oil to compensate for the lack of water content.

Beauty is BIG Business!

It's always so good to be in my element!  Since my Mom was a Cosmetologist, I have always known that beauty is BIG business!  I attended America's Beauty Show #ABS in Chicago, IL, March 9-11, 2013.  This trade show is exclusively for licensed beauty professionals.

Stephanie Laynes CEO Smooth Skin Supply
I worked at a vendor booth with my girl, Stephanie Laynes, CEO of Smooth Skin Supply and formulator of Se Brazil Wax in the Face and Body Pavilion.  We always have such a great time educating Estheticians about wax chemistry, techniques and products.  Se Brazil Wax is truly for the serious waxers out there..those who know...KNOW!  She has formulated this line of both soft and hard wax products, including pre-and post-treatment products.  My favorite is the Soothe Post-Wax Spray.
Me & The Schedulicity Super-Stylist

I ventured over the Hair Pavilion.  WOW...the energy in that place was ridiculous! It's was so interesting to have a behind-the-scenes peek at the creative and business side of beauty.  I was most impressed with Schedulicity.  They are a web-based appointment scheduling business and so much more.  They set up a superhero-themed Facebook wall for participants to sign, take pics and post to their pages.  Talk about the power of the Internet!  I'm sure many people enjoyed seeing their favorite stylist at the show and will have lots of questions about new products and services they learned about!

A couple of West Coast Naturals!
Ummm, yeah..about the rather large bag I'm carrying!  Now that I'm on my natural hair journey, I am always seeking products that work with my natural hair texture.  There was a whole section for "naturals" at ABS.  I met one of my favorite natural hair/beauty bloggers, Cassidy Blackwell of Natural Selection Blog. Forget "hair crush"... after reading her blog, it's more like a "life crush"!  She was very down to earth and I hope to connect with her for an L.A. Natural Hair event sometime this year.  Of course I had to try a new product line, DNA, based out of Chicago, IL.  I'll have to try the products and report back on another blog post.  I also received generous samples from Miss Jessie's and Kera Care for Natural Hair.

My next beauty biz adventure will take me to Miami...Stay tuned!
